How Many Metres in a Polyethylene Pipe Coil or Bar?

Coil lengths (50, 100 and 200 m) and bar lengths (6 and 12 m) of polyethylene pipe by diameter, approximate weight per coil and bar from the weight table, and a simple way to estimate how many pieces a project needs.

How Many Metres in a Polyethylene Pipe Coil or Bar?

How Many Metres Are in a Polyethylene Pipe Coil?

Polyethylene pipe is supplied in two forms: coils and bars. Small diameters up to 110 mm are supplied in coils of 50, 100 and 200 m, and diameters from 63 mm up are supplied in bars of 6 and 12 m. So the answer to how many metres a pipe roll holds depends on the diameter: 32 mm pipe is bought in 100 or 200 m coils, while 160 mm pipe is available only in 6 and 12 m bars.

From 63 to 110 mm both forms exist, and the choice between coil and bar depends on the project. In this guide we read coil and bar lengths from the size rows recorded for the catalog products and the weight of each piece from the company's approved weight table, so you can estimate the length and weight of a load before ordering.

Coil Length: Which Diameters and How Long?

For PE100 water pressure pipe, diameters from 20 to 110 mm are supplied in coils, and each coil is 50, 100 or 200 m long. The same pattern holds for PE80 water pipe from 16 to 110 mm and for polyethylene gas pipe from 20 to 110 mm. Continuous coils speed up long runs and reduce the number of intermediate joints.

Diameters from 20 to 50 mm are supplied only as coils, which means the catalog lists no 6 or 12 m bar for these sizes. If your project needs pipe smaller than 63 mm, base the order quantity on the coil lengths of 50, 100 or 200 m.

Bar Length: From 63 to 630 mm

A polyethylene pipe bar is 6 or 12 m long. For PE100 and PE80 water pipe, bars are supplied from 63 to 630 mm, and for gas pipe from 63 to 250 mm. Diameters of 125 mm and above are supplied only as bars.

The table below puts the coil and bar lengths of the three main catalog products side by side. The information is taken from the size rows recorded in the Caspian Sanat ZAAL catalog. The sizes listed are the catalog's standard sizes, and whether a given combination is available at the time of purchase is confirmed by inquiry.

How Much Does a Coil or Bar Weigh?

To estimate the weight of a load, multiply the weight per metre by the length of the coil or bar. The weight per metre comes from the company's approved weight table and depends on the outside diameter and the SDR. A given manufacturer's pipe may weigh slightly differently, so these numbers are estimates.

For example, 63 mm pipe at SDR 11 weighs 1.05 kg per metre, so a 100 m coil weighs about 105 kg. 110 mm pipe at SDR 11 weighs 3.14 kg per metre, and a 12 m bar weighs about 37.68 kg. For any other diameter and SDR you can use the pipe weight calculator.

How Many Coils or Bars Should You Order?

The simplest estimate is to divide the total route length by the length of each piece and round up. For 350 m of pipe you need two 200 m coils or four 100 m coils. The longer each piece is, the fewer intermediate joints you need, but a longer coil or bar is harder to handle on site.

This is only a first calculation. Cutting losses, bends in the route, joint locations and the installation method can change the real number. Before ordering, check the length and diameter with the project consultant or contractor, and send an inquiry for the price and confirmation of availability.
