What a butterfly valve is and how it works
A butterfly valve has a round disc mounted on a shaft inside the body. A quarter turn of the shaft sets the disc along the flow to open the valve, or across the flow to close it. Its short face-to-face length and lower weight than a gate valve of the same size are common reasons it is chosen for water lines.
The body is ductile iron, and EN 593 is the standard for metallic butterfly valves. The valve is used in drinking-water mains, irrigation networks and industrial plants.
Wafer versus lug, and lever versus gearbox
In the wafer type, the valve body sits between the two line flanges and long bolts run from one flange to the other, holding the valve between them. In the lug type, the body has drilled lugs around it and each flange is bolted to the lugs separately. The choice depends on the line design and the installation method.
The valve is supplied with a lever for quick operation or with a gearbox for smoother, more controlled operation, particularly in the larger sizes. To connect it to polyethylene pipe, a stub end and a backing ring are normally used.

Wafer & Lug Butterfly Valve — FAQ
What is the difference between a wafer and a lug butterfly valve?
A wafer valve is held between two flanges by through-bolts, while a lug valve has drilled lugs and each flange is bolted to it separately.
Is a butterfly valve better than a gate valve?
Both are used for shut-off; a butterfly valve is shorter, lighter and quicker to operate, and the right choice depends on the line. We advise on this before you buy.
How is a butterfly valve connected to PE pipe?
With a stub end butt-fused to the pipe end and a metal backing ring that takes the bolts.
Which sizes of wafer and lug butterfly valve are supplied?
The most-used sizes from DN50 to DN600, with a lever or a gearbox.
