What a spiral wound gasket is and how it is built
A spiral wound gasket sits between two metal flanges and seals the joint. Its main part is a thin metal strip and a soft filler wound together in a spiral. When the flange bolts are tightened the spiral is compressed and fills the unevenness of the flange faces.
The combination of metal and filler gives the gasket a spring-like behaviour, so it holds its seal through changes in pressure and temperature and through line vibration better than a plain flat gasket. That is why it is used on industrial, steam, oil and gas lines and wherever a metal flanged joint works in demanding conditions.
