What is perforated drainage pipe and where is it used?
Perforated drainage pipe is a single-wall corrugated polyethylene pipe with small perforations in the wall, so excess water in the soil enters the pipe and flows on a gentle gradient to an outlet. The corrugated profile provides the stiffness to carry soil load and the flexibility to supply the pipe in coils.
It is used for subsurface drainage of farmland and soil salinity control, drainage behind retaining walls and building foundations, parks and landscaping, sports fields and road verges. It is designed to DIN 1187 and EN 13476.
Choosing a filter wrap: bare, fibre or geotextile
The wrap depends on soil grading. In fine soils such as silt and fine sand, soil particles are carried into the perforations and block the pipe; a fibre or geotextile wrap lets water through while retaining soil particles.
In coarse soils, or where the pipe is surrounded by graded gravel filter material, bare pipe performs well. Pipe diameter depends on the drained area, drain spacing and design flow, and should be set by the drainage consultant.
Installation and supply
Excavate the trench to a uniform design gradient and clear the bottom of stones and clods. Uncoil the pipe without overstretching and lay it in the trench; surround it with washed gravel where required, then backfill. Connect the end to a manhole or outlet channel and protect the pipe inlet from soil ingress.
