What is a submersible pump riser pipe?
A riser pipe carries water from the submersible pump outlet deep in the well up to the wellhead, while also carrying the weight of the pump and water column. PE100 pipe, thanks to its corrosion resistance, low weight and flexibility, has become a common replacement for galvanised pipe in agricultural and drinking-water wells.
With steel pipe, corroded threads and couplings eventually cause leaks and can even drop the pump. Polyethylene does not rust, scales little and in small diameters is installed as a coil without mid-joints. This product is dimensioned to ISO 4427.
Choosing pressure class and installation depth
Pressure in the riser is highest at the bottom, at the pump outlet, and roughly equals the pump head; every 10 m of water column is about 1 bar. The pipe's pressure class must exceed the pump's maximum (shut-off) pressure, which is why this product comes only in PN16 (SDR 11), PN20 (SDR 9) and PN25 (SDR 7.4).
Besides pressure, the pipe carries the weight of the pump, cable and water. Allowable depth depends on pump weight, pipe size and class and the riser fittings; give the pump data and well depth when requesting a quote so our engineers can confirm the class. A safety rope or wire holding the pump is recommended.
Fittings, installation and supply
The riser is installed with dedicated riser fittings (a threaded adapter to the pump and a wellhead flange or cap). Fittings must be designed to carry pressure and tensile load together. When lowering the pump, strap the power cable to the pipe so vibration does not damage it.

What pressure class should a riser pipe have?
It must exceed the pump's maximum pressure. Every 10 m of head is about 1 bar; a pump with 150 m head produces about 15 bar and needs at least PN16.
Is PE riser pipe better than galvanised?
PE does not rust, is lighter and in small sizes has no mid-joints, so there is no corrosion-related risk of leaks or pump drop. For deep wells, the pressure class and fittings must be chosen carefully.
What is the maximum installation depth?
There is no single figure: it depends on pump weight, pipe size and class and the fittings. Enter pump data and well depth in the quote form for our engineers to confirm the class.
