What a stub end (flange adaptor) is and what it does
A polyethylene pipe cannot be bolted directly to a flanged valve, a pump or a metal pipe. The flange adaptor, also called a stub end, is a polyethylene piece with a wide collar that is butt-fused to the end of the pipe. That collar is the sealing face of the flanged joint.
A metal backing ring slides over the pipe and sits behind the collar of the stub end. The bolts pass through the ring and press the stub end against the flange of the valve, pump or metal pipe opposite. The bolt load is carried by the metal ring, and the polyethylene collar only does the sealing.
Short and long types, SDR and standard
Stub ends are supplied in short and long types; the choice depends on the fusion method and the space available at the joint. Like any butt-fusion fitting, the stub end must match the pipe in size and SDR so that the wall thickness is the same at the fusion face.
EN 12201-3 covers polyethylene fittings for water supply systems. The galvanised or epoxy-coated steel backing ring and the ductile-iron backing ring used with the stub end are listed on this site.
