Electronic control and operation of electrofusion units

The electrofusion control unit is an intelligent power source designed to energize the resistive heating coils embedded inside electrofusion fittings (couplers, tees, reducers, and tapping saddles). Calibrated low-voltage electric current heats the coils, simultaneously plasticizing the fitting socket and pipe surface. Upon cooling, the polymer chains intermingle into a permanent, hermetic molecular joint.

In conformity with ISO 12176-2 guidelines, the unit incorporates ambient temperature sensors that adjust cycle durations for thermal conditions. An internal data logger records date, time, operator ID, applied voltage, joint resistance, and completion status, generating traceable QA inspection logs.

Welding capacity and jobsite best practices

Electrofusion control boxes typically weld polyethylene fittings from 20 mm up to a maximum diameter of 400 mm (od_max_mm), operating across variable output voltages between 8 and 48 volts AC/DC.

Prior to welding, mechanical pipe scraping to peel the surface oxide, solvent degreasing with isopropanol, and clamping in alignment clamps to eliminate bending forces are mandatory until the full cooling period elapses. Enter your project specifications into our RFQ form for formal proposals.

Electrofusion Control Unit — FAQ

What maximum diameter can this electrofusion machine weld?

These units typically handle electrofusion fittings from 20 mm up to a maximum outside diameter of 400 mm.

How are welding parameters entered into the machine?

By scanning the standard barcode on the electrofusion fitting using the optical barcode wand or laser scanner.

Does the machine log joint inspection records?

Yes, the onboard memory stores complete fusion records including voltage, time, and operator for quality control audits.

Why is mechanical scraping mandatory before electrofusion?

Scraping removes the oxidized outer skin of the polyethylene pipe, which otherwise prevents molecular chain fusion.
