What a PE butt-fusion elbow is and where it is used
A polyethylene butt-fusion elbow changes the direction of a pipeline by 90° or 45°. Both ends have the same diameter as the pipe and are joined to it by butt fusion: the pipe end and the elbow end are melted on a heater plate and pressed together, so that once cooled they form one continuous polyethylene line.
The elbow is used in water mains, sewage networks and gas lines, wherever the route has to turn around an obstacle, change level or reach a new branch. The 45° elbow is used for gentler changes of direction and the 90° elbow for full turns.
Matching the elbow SDR to the pipe, and EN 12201-3
In butt fusion the two parts must have the same wall thickness, so the elbow has to match the pipe in both size and SDR. If the elbow SDR differs from the pipe, the fusion faces do not line up and the joint quality drops. When ordering, give the outside diameter of the pipe and its SDR exactly.
EN 12201-3 covers polyethylene fittings for water supply systems. Butt fusion needs a hydraulic or manual butt-fusion machine, both of which are listed on this site.
